Trained ophthalmic technicians usually assist our ophthalmologists with some of the medical history and testing. During a comprehensive eye exam, you will likely undergo the following tests:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Visual Acuity &#8211;<\/strong> to assess how clear your vision is. It measures what is considered normal vision at a distance of 20 feet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Retinoscopy, refraction, or aberrometer &#8211;<\/strong> to measure your current eyeglasses or contact lens prescription.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Slit Lamp examination &#8211;<\/strong> an instrument to look inside the eye for signs of common eye diseases and conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Visual Fields &#8211;<\/strong> test to identify blind spots or problems with side (peripheral) vision.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cover Test &#8211;<\/strong> to check for how well the eyes are working together and detect strabismus (abnormal alignment of the eyes).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Glaucoma Test &#8211;<\/strong> This test is also known as tonometry that measures the pressure within the eye.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evaluation of the optic nerve, retina, and blood vessels &#8211;<\/strong> evaluation of these parts of the eyes uses an ophthalmoscope and pupil dilation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Is It Important to Have My Pupils Dilated?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your eye doctor examines your eyes without dilation, they will not be able to see any serious problems that may be developing in the back of the eye.
