The Link Between Digital Devices and Eye Strain

Posted by: Northwest Eye in News on May 8, 2025

In today’s digital age, screens are everywhere. From morning emails to evening streaming, most of us spend hours a day looking at digital devices. While convenient, this constant screen time can take a toll on our eyes. At Northwest Eye, we often hear from patients experiencing tired, dry, or irritated eyes — all common signs of digital eye strain.

What Is Digital Eye Strain?

Digital Eye Strain, sometimes called Computer Vision Syndrome, refers to a group of eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged screen use. It’s not limited to just computers, smartphones, tablets, and even e-readers can contribute.

Common symptoms include:

  • Blurry or double vision
  • Dry or watery eyes
  • Headaches
  • Eye fatigue or discomfort
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Neck and shoulder pain

If you’ve ever noticed these symptoms after a long day at work or scrolling through your phone in bed, you’re not alone.

Why Do Screens Cause Eye Strain?

Our eyes work harder when viewing digital screens compared to reading print. Screens often have glare, flicker, or poor contrast. Fonts on digital devices may be less sharp, and blinking tends to decrease while focusing on screens leading to dry, irritated eyes.

Additionally, many people use screens at close distances or in poorly lit environments, which can make it even more difficult for the eyes to stay comfortable and focused.

How Much Screen Time Is Too Much?

The amount of screen time that leads to discomfort can vary from person to person. On average, many people now spend over 7 hours a day looking at screens from phones and tablets to computers and TVs. For most, that time begins early in the day and continues well into the evening, often without enough breaks.

While technology is a necessary part of daily life, finding the right balance and building eye-friendly habits can make a big difference in your comfort and eye health.

Protecting Your Eyes: Simple Strategies That Work

Fortunately, reducing digital eye strain doesn’t mean giving up your devices. A few practical steps can go a long way:

  • Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps your eyes relax and reset.
  • Adjust Screen Settings: Use blue light filters, increase font sizes, and reduce glare by adjusting brightness or using anti-reflective coatings.
  • Blink Often: It’s easy to forget, but blinking keeps your eyes lubricated. Remind yourself to blink more, especially during long sessions.
  • Check Your Posture: Make sure your screen is at eye level and about an arm’s length away. Poor ergonomics can cause both eye and neck strain.
  • Use Artificial Tears: Over-the-counter lubricating drops can help relieve dryness from reduced blinking.
  • Schedule Regular Eye Exams: Eye strain can sometimes signal an uncorrected vision issue. A comprehensive exam ensures your prescription is up to date and helps rule out other concerns.

When to See an Eye Doctor

If your symptoms persist or worsen, don’t ignore them. Eye strain may seem harmless, but ongoing discomfort can affect productivity and overall well-being. At Northwest Eye, we offer expert care and personalized recommendations to help you feel and see better.
