7 Questions to Ask During Your Child’s Eye Exam

Posted by: Northwest Eye in News on May 10, 2022

A children’s eye exam is an expert assessment of your child’s eye health and vision performed by a pediatric optometrist (OD) or pediatric ophthalmologist (MD). Eye exams for children are very important to ensure your child’s eyes are healthy and have no vision problems that could interfere with school performance and potentially affect your child’s safety.

What is the difference between vision screenings and comprehensive eye exams?

Vision screenings given at school are useful tools to identify certain vision problems that a child might have. However, vision screenings are not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam.

Why is it important to get your child’s eyes examined?

A full comprehensive eye exam is needed to correctly diagnose any impairments or conditions and provide treatment. Our Northwest Eye optometrists and ophthalmologists have the advanced training and clinical tools to perform a thorough evaluation of your child’s eyes and vision.

A comprehensive eye exam is the best way to make sure your child’s vision is healthy, clear, and comfortable. Visiting a doctor’s office can be an anxious experience for both children and parents. An important aspect of any patient-doctor relationship is communication. Preparing your questions ahead of time can not only ease anxious feelings but also help you best manage your child’s vision health.

Here are seven questions to ask during your child’s eye exam:

  1. What tests will we be doing today?
  2. What activities and lifestyle changes can you suggest to help manage my child’s condition OR keep their eyes healthy as they grow?
  3. Is my child at risk of developing any eye conditions such as myopia?
  4. How can I best monitor my child’s eye health?
  5. Do you have any materials or other suggestions on how I can learn more about eye health?
  6. What is the difference between vision screenings at school and comprehensive eye exams?
  7. How often do you recommend we return for a comprehensive eye exam?
