Northwest Eye is celebrating Healthy Vision Month this May! This month aims to increase awareness and emphasize the importance of taking care of your eyes and vision. With warmer weather ahead, we Minnesotans tend to be more active, enjoy the beauty of nature and make the most of the sunshine and long days. With all that fun comes the importance of maintaining healthy vision practices.
Here are a few tips to keep your eyes safe this summer:
- Avoid a Sunburn
Much like UV-rays are harmful to your skin, they are also dangerous to your eyes. Luckily, sunglasses are a stylish way to protect yourself. When choosing a pair of sunglasses, make sure they are labeled 100% UV protection. This ensures they block both UVA and UVB rays. Also note the glasses should fit snugly around your eyes and offer protection on the sides. - Swim with Goggles
Nothing says summer like an afternoon at the pool or a day on the lake, but chlorine and natural bodies of water may contain contaminants that are harmful to the eye. To prevent possible infection, wear goggles while you are in the water. Goggles can reduce contamination and irritation. FUN FACT: You can have prescription swim goggles made at our Northwest Eye optical! - Wear Eye Protection
Outdoor projects may be a lingering item on your “to-do” list. While doing work outside, it’s extremely important to be cautious about dust, dirt, and loose debris. Simply wearing safety goggles can help protect you from possible injury. - Schedule Your Eye Check-Up
Eyes can be damaged year-around, so it’s important to get a regular eye exam no matter the season. Annual visits for your eyes are crucial, as a thorough exam can detect other potential health problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, vision disorders and more.
Making healthy vision choices and having regular eye exams can help reduce your risk of vison loss. Be proactive this summer by taking charge of your eye health by following these tips or making an appointment with your doctor today! (763) 416-7655.
